On the evening of January 12, 2017, the winners of the NAFA Cup China International Youth Fur Design contest were announced at the China National Convention Center in Beijing as part of the opening ceremonies of the 43rd China Fur & Leather Products Fair.
Now in its 13th year, the “NAFA Cup” is one of the largest fur design competitions in China, and has developed a rich tradition of recognizing the brightest fashion design students in the country. This year’s theme was “Yan Sheng”, which means deriving and developing.
Twenty final sketches were selected from almost 1,000 applicants from fashion design schools across the country. The sketches were then transformed into breathtaking garments with the support of five of China’s leading fur manufacturers: Huasi Holding Company Limited, Yinshan Fur and Leather Co., Ltd., Tianjin Baerdi Garments Co., Ltd., Beijing Yuanlong Fur & Leather Co., Ltd., and Ningxia Chengfeng Yade Trading Co., Ltd.
This year’s twenty finalists each created beautiful yet inventive mixed fabric designs using a selection of top quality NAFA wild furs, in combination with knits, leather, cashmere and other fabrics. The designs embodied the vivid and detailed imaginations of the young designers who created them, captivating the audience as they were paraded up and down the catwalk.
The winners are:
Gold: Yang Xuesong (Luxun Academy of Fine Arts)
Silver: Yang Hongguo (Jiangxi Institute of Fashion Technology)
Bronze: Xu Heng (China Academy of Art)
The three winners each were awarded an all-expense paid trip to Toronto, Canada to attend the 2017 Studio NAFA workshop, where they will have the opportunity to learn more about fur design and international marketing. Moreover, their winning sketches will be submitted to the International Fur Federation’s ReMix competition in Milan.
“NAFA is enormously proud of our sponsorship of the NAFA Cup and China’s young designers over these years. These young people have shown their creativity and courage in using a diverse range of colour, textures, techniques and fur varieties tonight. It’s very impressive. It is important for the trade to continue to develop new styles on a continuous basis to satisfy the ever changing interests of new consumers” said Rob Cahill, NAFA Senior Vice-President, Marketing.
Following the NAFA Cup awards presentation, the opening ceremony continued with an inspiring showcase co-sponsored by NAFA, Yinshan Fur and Leather Co., Ltd., and Huasi Holding Company Limited. The showcase highlighted fashion trends from the collections of renowned design and production houses: Gianfranco Ferré Furs, Braschi, Rindi, Farley Chatto, JARRET, ElAMA, Guy Laroche, Pajaro, Oscar de la Renta, and Lie Sang Bong. The presentation reflected the ways in which NAFA’s exquisite assortment of furs inspired some of the world’s most talented designers to create beautiful fur garments, representing the latest international fur trends.
NAFA would like to thank all the participating students for their efforts. In addition, NAFA thanks the China Fur Trade for their support in producing the garments, and the International Fur Federation for their sponsorship of the show.
